The as Yet Untitled Detroit Trip Composition

The latest from the Studio:

Its been relatively quite here in the studio over the last few weeks. I’ve been concentrating on settling in to my new gig at Web Associates. I also to a little trip to Detroit with Christine for a wedding and visit(s) with family and friends out there. I didn’t bring my bass on the trip, so when I started feeling fidgety due to lack of musical activities (which was just a few minutes into that flight east) I fired up Reason on my laptop and began mucking about.

If you haven’t yet heard me singing the praises of Reason, allow me to hum a few bars here. For my uses, Reason is easily the best, most versatile piece for music software I own. It doesn’t record audio (I use it in conjunction with Digital Performer, my digital audio sequencer of choice) but is a “virtual studio system” that allows you to populate a “rack” with all kinds of software devices… Synths, samplers, drum machines... not to mention all sorts of audio processing. Your only limit is your processor. Want to stack up ten synth modules? Great! Want to run that sampler through a Scream 4 distortion and envelope filter? No problem. Sorry. Geeking out there for a second. You can check out the Reason web site for more of the gory details.

Back to our story. During our week in Detroit, I kept fidgeting with my laptop, more or less absent-mindely programming up some beats and patters and such. By the time we got back home, I had a fairly workable outline of a composition—and it only took a few more days to translate that into actual tracks on my music. I’ll save that process description for a future post. I also couldn’t resist laying down a single track of bass… just because… that’s what I do. Enjoy! (It is as of yet untitled… so I’m open to suggestions) Mind the download… its a rather heavy 8-minute, 14MB high quality mp3. Just so’s you know.
