Making Noise

The usual regimen for the evening: See what’s on TiVo. Watch whatever’s on TiVo. If there’s nothing on TiVo, surf around for something to put on TiVo. Then flip around the channels mindlessly and find something that should have been on TiVo, etc… I usually tire of this at 12:30 or 1 o’clock, at which point I wake myself up (from the half sleep in which TV will put you) turn out the lights, and head down the stairs toward the bedroom—lamenting with each step the fact that I didn’t draw anything, write anything, or play anything.

These last couple nights, however, I’ve been overtaken by this irresistible urge to do some recording. So instead of taking a left at the top of the stairs, I found myself heading into the studio and firing up my recording system. Rickenbacker in hand, jacked into my Bass POD, I dialed up in a suitably moody patch, hit record… and went. I had no idea what I was doing or where it was going… it was great. No thinking, just doing. THe thinking will come later, when I’ll go back and pick through the pieces, sifting for interesting bits, cutting, pasting, rearranging… who knows. I’ll keep you posted.
